1. Who can apply for these opportunities?

Any of our current students are welcome to apply for the activities of their choosing! Some opportunities may be more appropriate for some programs than others, however. For example, our massage therapy students may not be as well suited for the NAHA competition given that their program doesn檛 cover hair styling! If you檙e not sure about how your program fits with the extracurricular program, feel free to talk with one of your instructors! Both students and graduates are welcome to apply as well!

2. What are the biggest benefits of attending one of these activities?

The biggest benefit for our students is that they get the opportunity to network and work alongside industry icons. Students also usually get a lot of hands-on technical experience that they can immediately apply from behind the chair or in the treatment room. It檚 a boot camp of techniques that can strengthen their styling or makeup muscles a lot quicker!

3. What is the application process like?

The application process for each program is the same. There is a paper and video application portion, your retail and service numbers are evaluated, and your grades and attendance are included as well. The video portion of the application is probably the most involved, because each applicant needs to create a video on YouTube where they explain why they should be selected, why Aveda is important to them, and what this program would do for them and their career.

The only program with an additional application requirement is the NAHA competition, which requires applicants to include a before and after image of their work on a model. They need to show the model with no makeup or styling done, and then show how their work looks on the model afterwards. We want to see what our students are capable of!

4. What do you generally look for in these applications?

After meeting the basic academic and service number requirements, the most important thing we look for is how the applicant represents the Aveda lifestyle. We want to see that they are hard workers that would represent the school well and what it stands for during their travels or competitions. It檚 hard for students to be selected sometimes because of how many incredible applicants want to participate, so it檚 all about making yourself stand out and showing how this would help you and your career.

5. What can I do now to prepare for a future extracurricular activity?

The biggest tip we can give is to work with your educators on academics, attendance, and service and retail numbers. Make it known that you檙e applying. Make connections with people everywhere so that you can show that you can work well on a team. Be engaged with the other students and staff at the school and really push yourself from the very beginning!

Traditional beauty spas are where people usually go for massage or skincare services provided by massage therapists or estheticians. Medical spas often provide similar services while also providing services performed by doctors such as dermatologists or chiropractors. This allows clients to come to a convenient location to have their conditions diagnosed and treated by the most appropriate specialist. Dermatologists often work with skin diseases and things that estheticians can檛 usually work on, and the dermatologists refer their clients to their in-house estheticians for services that can help their patients as well.

The Aveda esthiology education can provide an educational foundation that can allow students to excel in both medical spas and traditional spas. All of our basic Esthiology programs introduce medical spa services such as microdermabrasion and peels, while our masters Esthiology program covers those procedures in depth. These types of procedures are very common in medical spas, so we want our students to feel prepared to practice them!

淏ecause the Esthiology education is foundational, many times when students enter a medical spa they are given specific training on lasers, peels, and other things. Students learn the foundational information, and we teach them that learning never ends, so when they go into those specific spas they are open to learning new things.�

About Anne Skubis

Anne was one of our many students who changed careers to pursue a career in beauty. She originally graduated from college with a degree in secondary education, but quickly discovered that she didn檛 enjoy the student teaching. She tried a few different jobs in retail and management, but didn檛 find anything especially fulfilling. Anne always performed well in school, and she had a strong desire to help people, so she enrolled in law school so that she could make use of her intelligence and compassion in tandem.

Before long Anne discovered that law school was a competitive and densely toxic environment. Many of the students took to alcohol or drug abuse as a way to manage stress, and Anne found herself trapped alongside her classmates. After two years of feeling like law school was destroying her, she made the difficult decision to leave law school behind and return to her home in Tucson to get a clean start on life. It was during this time at home that she saw a commercial for Aveda Institutes and felt a connection with the school. During her time at law school she worked at Sephora and she loved working with beauty products and helping people there, so she figured that beauty school would allow her to help others through beauty!

Anne檚 Role at Inspire Greatness Aveda

After seeing that commercial, Anne enrolled at Inspire Greatness Aveda right away. She graduated from the esthiology program about 10 years ago, and she檚 been working at Inspire Greatness Aveda ever since. She was hired to work at the school right after graduation and worked as the marketing director until her recent promotion to director of the Tucson campus. As director, Anne has her hand in everything that happens at the school, from day to day education to the travel abroad experiences! She continuously works to improve the school and uplift both educators and students. She檚 in charge of keeping Inspire Greatness great!

In addition to being the director of the Tucson campus, Anne is also an Aveda Purefessional, which means she is a highly specialized educator. She specializes in makeup, and works directly for Aveda to teach about makeup. The audition process to become a Purefessional is exceptionally rigorous, requiring a preliminary video audition before being invited to a boot camp and in-person audition with the Aveda global artistic team. It was a very challenging process, but Anne檚 Purefessional title is well-earned!

Why Inspire Greatness Aveda?

Anne discovered the meaning of Aveda when she traveled to India with a group of students and staff that included Brad VanDyke. During her trip she was able to visit the Himalayan Institute where Horst Rechelbacher was taught about Ayurveda and came up with the Aveda brand. She also learned about many of the rituals of Ayurveda and really came to understand the importance of the Aveda brand. The commitment to ingredients, responsible packaging, and giving back to the community isn檛 just part of what Aveda does, it檚 part of what Aveda is. Anne檚 biggest takeaway from her trip to India was why Aveda matters, and she hopes to share that inspiration with the students at Inspire Greatness Aveda.

Advice for Future Students

Anne has a deep and abiding love of what she does and the Aveda way of life she leads. When asked about advice for future students, she says:

淵our education is what you make of it. Focus on developing and competing with yourself and don檛 worry about what your classmate next to you is doing. Take advantage of every extra opportunity, class, workshop, guest, or speaker that is scheduled. Ultimately, be positive. If you encounter challenges along the way, immediately begin thinking of solutions instead of excuses.�

Aveda Institute graduates never cease to surprise and amaze us with what they use their talents to do. One of our earliest graduates from the Aveda Institute in Denver started her own skincare product line and opened her own spa! This kind of story is not uncommon among Aveda Institute graduates who have a passion for beauty and a drive to be successful. By chasing what they love most and working hard, they are able to accomplish great things!

About Lynne

Lynne is one of the earliest cosmetologists to graduate from Aveda Institute Denver! She graduated from our cosmetology program back in 2006. What stood out to us was the fiery passion she had for skincare and her decorated background in business. At that point she had already created a few skin care products as part of her business, but she wanted to learn more about working in spa environments so that she could be more successful as a salon owner. Her drive to be an outstanding salon owner eventually led Lynne to the Aveda Institute Denver. After graduation, she worked in some Aveda spas in the Denver area to get more experience in the spa environment.

淚 learned that the more you focus on your strongest skill set and get clear on what you want, the easier it is to move forward.�

Building a Business

Lynne originally owned two spa locations, one in Denver and the other in Pagosa Springs. She made the tough choice to let go of her Denver location so that she could focus on developing her beauty products in Pagosa Springs, which is where she truly wanted to spend her time! To get the word out about her products, Lynne sampled at farmers markets, built marketing campaigns, and increased her distribution through Amazon. Spending time on the quality of her product is important, she likes to put her best efforts into each bottle before they leave the hive!

Lynne檚 Secret for Success

One of the greatest challenges with running a business is getting the word out, and Lynne quickly learned that online marketing would not be as easy as she thought! She tried putting her product out everywhere, including sites like Etsy, eBay, Pinterest, social media, Amazon, and even her own website. She discovered that photography is the key to product positioning and allure, and was able to find the most success by partnering with Amazon. Now her business has grown to the point where she has people who help her with orders and shipping, which gives her the time she wants to refine her products!

淔or us, partnering with Amazon has been a big success. We can use their warehouses to store and stock products, fill orders quickly, and gain a much larger customer base to our products. Our Organic Cuticle Oil has been an Amazon Best product on and off over the last five years, generating the sales of more than 200 units a month!�

Not only is her product line performing well, Lynne檚 spa in Pagosa springs is in excellent shape! It檚 currently in the final stages of a remodel that will give it a new look and feel. She loves the spa because there are so many different treatments she can offer to help people look and feel better. One of her personal favorites is the hydraderm exfoliation facial, which is a gentler version of microdermabrasion. Lynne loves being able to develop products that can help her spa experience improve!

Advice for Students

When asked about her advice for beauty school students, Lynne says:

淔ind the parts you love and spend your time doing that. It is great to try new things and see what products, styles and services best suit your own style. You will tend to attract what you project � so make sure you love it.�
